Obituary

Wilma Jean Skelton of Blackwell, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday morning, October 13, 2016, peacefully at home after a short illness at the age of 91 years.

Jean was born on September 15, 1925, at home, south of Braman, to Francis William and Freida Martha (Giese) Fields. She attended Friendship School and Lone Tree School before transferring to Blackwell Public Schools in the ninth grade. She graduated from Blackwell High School in 1943. Following graduation she moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she worked for Boeing Aircraft. Upon returning to Blackwell, she married Harold Logan Skelton on July 30, 1946. Her employment included working at Union School #61 as a cook and the Plainsman Restaurant. In 1964 she began working at Security Bank and Trust Company running the proof machine, serving as a teller, and later moved to the loan department. She retired from the bank in 1987.

Jean was an excellent seamstress, making most of her children's clothes and also sewing for friends and extended family. Her mother taught her how to knit and crochet and she knitted over one hundred baby caps for Blackwell Regional Hospital where she also volunteered after her retirement. She also served as a volunteer at the Wheatheart Nutrition Center and the Top of Oklahoma Historical Society. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell.

She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Carrington of Blackwell; a sister, Margaret Croft of Ponca City; a son-in-law, Pat Lessert of Blackwell; two grandchildren, Chad Lessert and wife Sherry of Blackwell and Katy Lessert of Carl Junction, Missouri; and five great grandchildren, Clayton and Braydon Lessert of Blackwell, and Hannah, Logan and Miya Carnes of Carl Junction, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; a daughter, Debbi Lessert; and two brothers, George and Glen Fields.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 17th in the Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. Cap McIlnay of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Honorary casketbearers will be her great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her honor with Hospice of North Central Oklahoma in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
