Walter Roscoe Lyon of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday afternoon, January 2, 2009, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 100 years.

Walter Roscoe Lyon was born on September 23, 1908, in Okean, Arkansas, to Burt and Mary (Fowler) Lyon. He grew up in several communities in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. In his early adult life, he moved with his family to Cove, Arkansas, where he met his future wife, Veata Pauline Capehart. They were married on May 29, 1933, in Cheryvale, Kansas, and they settled there before moving to Blackwell in 1940. They celebrated sixty-six years of marriage before her death in 1999. Following their move to Blackwell he worked at the Blackwell Zinc Company for over thirty years having never to miss a day of work due to illness. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and rebuilding bicycles. He was a dear and kind man with wonderful attitude. He was always willing to give a helping hand and had kind comments to say to everyone, trying to brighten their day. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Blackwell.

He is survived by his daughter, Doris Stroup and husband Ron of Belle Plaine, Kansas; a granddaughter, Lisa Cooper and husband Stuart of Lawrence, Kansas; a grandson, Mark Stroup and wife Richelle of Derby, Kansas; and five great grandchildren, Brandon, Bryce and Kelsey Cooper of Lawrence, Kansas, and Austin and Tyler Stroup of Derby, Kansas.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; and several brothers and sisters.

Services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Thursday, January 8th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Dittman of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
