Wallace Armond Jones, long time resident of Arkansas City, Kansas, found eternal rest on June 14, 2009, in the Medicalodge of Arkansas City at the age of 87 years.
Wallace Armond Jones was born on November 4, 1921, in Antlers, Oklahoma, to Jesse Nicholas and Catherine Corena (Smith) Jones. As a young boy he moved with is family to Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma, where he attended Ft. Cobb Elementary School. He later moved to Chilocco where he attended Chilocco Indian School and competed with the school boxing team. While in school, he met Lois Ida Smith in Blackwell, Oklahoma, and on May 20, 1941, they were married in Medford, Oklahoma. On November 18, 1942, he entered the United States Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, during World War II. While in the Navy Seebees, Wallace was stationed on Tarawa Island in the South Pacific for three years. Following his discharge on September 8, 1945, he returned to Oklahoma and began working for his uncle on the pipeline. He soon became a welder on the pipeline and traveled throughout the United States working various locations. One of his fondest memories was working on the Alaskan Pipeline. Wallace enjoyed watching all sports, but especially boxing. He also enjoyed woodworking and crafted many wooden lamps from lumber he brought back from Alaska. He also helped to build many boxing rings. He attended many Pow Wows with his family and enjoyed celebrating their Indian heritage.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lois Jones of Arkansas City, Kansas; three grandchildren, Cherokee Liles of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Shannon Harl of Houston, Texas, and Dustin Davis of Virginia Beach, Virginia; seven great grandchildren, Meghan Liles of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Mackenzie Liles of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Allison Daphne of Houston, Texas, William Harl of Houston, Texas, and Arielle and Colton Davis of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Pat Canaday of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; ten nieces, Sue Parker, Debbie Richardson, Iva Steiner, Cindy Griffith, Barbara Stewart, Vicky Hardesty, Lucy Gordon, Lisa Canaday, Janelle Smith and Betty Jean Falls; and seven nephews, Gene Arnold Jones Jr., Tommy Parker, Frank Parker, Jimmy Rymer, Gerald Boring, Monty Boring and Gary Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Janet Armond Davis; a brother, Gene Arnold Jones; and a sister, Juanita Parker.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 18th, in the Blackwell Cemetery in Blackwell, Oklahoma, with the Rev. Mike Brannon of the First United Methodist Church of Tonkawa, officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with military rites performed by the Blackwell American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
