Obituary

Vivian Horsechief Eagle Cornell of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, died Wednesday morning, December 8, 2010, at her home in Tonkawa at the age of 86 years.

Vivian Horsechief Eagle Cornell was born on October 14, 1924, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to David Horsechief and Sarah (Allen) Eagle. She grew up attending Pawnee Indian School before graduating from Chilocco Indian School in 1943. She married George H. Cornell on June 26, 1944, in Holdenville, Oklahoma, and they settled in Ponca City where she worked at the John E. Boyer Airplane Plant until 1945. She then worked for a short time at the Home and King Laundry before devoting herself to her family as a homemaker. In 1974 she worked as a teacher's aide in the Ponca City Public Schools before working as a nutrition aide in the Tonkawa WIC Program. She also served the Tonkawa Tribe as vice-president and secretary. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Tonkawa and was an original Tonkawa Scalp Dancer. She enjoyed baking, garage sales and bingo.

She is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Cornelia Cornell of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Georgiana Christine Cornell of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Lee Dawn McLean of Marland, Oklahoma; five sons, Simon Moses Cornell of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Allen Thomas Cornell, Richard Lee Cornell, Michael Joseph Cornell and George Edward Cornell all of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; two sisters, Mildred Horsechief Eagle Warrior of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Madelyn Horsechief Eagle Norman of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren; and sixteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son, Bruce Ellsworth Cornell; a sister, Christine Horsechief Eagle Haymond; two grandchildren, Allen Thomas Cornell Jr. and Richard Lee Cornell Jr.; and a great grandchild, Dominque Paschal.

A traditional tribal feast will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th with the funeral services set for 2:00 p.m. in the Tonkawa Tribal Gymnasium with the Rev. Clyde Hendricks of Minden Mines, Missouri, officiating. Burial will follow in the Tonkawa Tribal Cemetery at Ft. Oakland.

Casketbearers will be Henry Cornell, Chandano Cornell, Jody Cornell, George Cornell and C. J. Cornell.
