Obituary

Verlie Verl Stroup of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died early Sunday morning, October 10, 2010, in the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell at the age of 96 years.

Verlie Verl Stroup was born on January 9, 1914, in Billings, Oklahoma, to Ed and Minnie Melinda (Easterly) Lively. As a young girl she moved with the family to a farm north of Nardin, Oklahoma, where she grew up and attended Claire Rural School. Following her eighth grade year she returned to the home to care for her brothers and sisters. She married Walter Stroup on September 27, 1929, in Wichita, Kansas, and they settled on a farm north of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, where she assisted with the dairy farm and wheat harvest as well as serving her family as a homemaker. On August 10, 1982, they moved to Blackwell to make their home. Her husband preceded her in death on December 13, 2003, and she continued to make Blackwell her home. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell. She enjoyed listening to music, interior decorating and cooking for family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane McGaha and husband Dayle of Blackwell, Oklahoma; two sons, Jack Stroup and wife Jean of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and Ronald Stroup and wife Doris of Belle Plaine, Kansas; two sisters, Vera Patterson of Arkansas City, Kansas, and Veda Holcomb of Blackwell, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Velma Hickey; and seven brothers, Wilbur, Elmer, Floyd, George, Leland, Vernon and Roy Lively.

Services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 15th in the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell with the Rev. Herb Berkley officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Serving as casketbearers will be Mark Stroup, David Stroup, Kirk Stroup, Gavin McGaha, Bryan McGaha, Stuart Cooper and Kevin Nail.

A memorial has been established in her honor with the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
