Thelma Marie Stewart of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Monday, September 8, 2008, in the Westminster Village in Ponca City, Oklahoma, at the age of 96 years.
Thelma Marie Stewart was born on June 29, 1912, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to J. J. and Lottie (Ivers) Mans. She grew up in Blackwell attending Blackwell Public Schools graduating in 1930. Following her education she married Glenn William Stewart on September 12, 1931, in Blackwell and they settled in Blackwell. She worked for Consolidated Gas Company which later became Arkla Gas Company for over ten years. She then began working as the first deputy court clerk in Blackwell's district court office. She also worked in the Newkirk district court office as first deputy and bookkeeper. Her husband preceded her in death in March of 1980 and she continued to make Blackwell her home until moving to Ponca City in 2000. She was a member of the First Christian Church and a charter member of the XL Sunday School Class. She was also active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and served as a deaconess. Other memberships include American Association of Retired Persons which she served as secretary and treasurer. She enjoyed playing bridge, bingo and especially dancing. She also loved to travel and document her many adventures with photos.
She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Porter of Tucson, Arizona, Charlotte Ruggs and husband Max of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Glenda Garriga of Ponca City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Joe Robb Sr.; and a sister, Marcellia Harris.
Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Friday, September 12th in the First Christian Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Jeff Koch officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
Honorary casketbearers will be Frank Dyer, Larry Cannon, JoDel Shepherd, Howard Myers, Richard Burge and Joe Robb Jr. Casketbearers will be her grandchildren, Bruce Ruggs, Glenn Ruggs, Steve Ruggs, David Hargraves, Mark Porter, Diann Porter and Jodi Norman.
Memorials have been established with the Christian Women's Fellowship at the First Christian Church in Blackwell or Hospice of North Central Oklahoma in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
