Thelma Alice DeWitt Kivett of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Sunday evening, November 28, 2010, in the Ponca City Nursing Home in Ponca City, Oklahoma, at the age of 96 years.
Thelma Alice DeWitt Kivett was born on March 6, 1914, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Omer and Eva (McGrew) Vandever. She grew up and attended school in Braman, Oklahoma, where she participated on the 1932 State Championship Basketball team. She graduated from Braman High School in 1932. She then attended University Preparatory School in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, for one year. She married Guy DeWitt on July 8, 1934, and they made their home five miles northwest of Braman where they operated a dairy and farming interest until his death on September 25, 1970. After his death she continued to live on the farm until marrying Alva Kivett on January 26, 1985, and the made their home west of Blackwell. He preceded her in death on December 11, 2007. She was the oldest living member of the First United Methodist Church in Braman. She also attended the First United Methodist Church in Nardin. Other memberships include the Eastern Star, Past Matrons Club, Friendly Neighbor Club, Alko Club and Henry Clay Chapter, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in South Texas.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Mears and her husband Allan of Annadale, Virginia; a son, Garold DeWitt and wife Louise of Braman, Oklahoma; a step-daughter, Shirley Franklin and husband Jim of Pearl, Mississippi; a step-son, Kenneth Kivett and wife Sue of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a sister, Scharlyene Adams of Portland, Oregon; two brothers, Wayne Vandever of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Harold Vandever of Champaign, Illinois; grandchildren, Steve DeWitt and wife Janie of Braman, Oklahoma, Sheryl Street and husband Darrell of Kaw City, Oklahoma, Garrett Mears and wife Kimberly of London, England, and Cynthia Hilyerd and husband William of Louisville, Kentucky; and great grandchildren, Dane, Drew and Dylan DeWitt of Braman, Oklahoma, Kayla Street of Kaw City, Oklahoma, and two more to be born in the next few months. She is also survived by numerous step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 3rd in the First United Methodist Church in Braman with the Rev. C. M. Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery
Casketbearers will be Vern Willbanks, Rusty Partee, Ron Van Zant, Jim Van Zant, Gary Gates and Gerry Ingram. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Elvin Worley, Jerry Johnston, Charles McGregor, Doyle Steffen, Graham Glaser and Jim Dickerson.
