Obituary

Rollin William Vickery D.V.M. of Braman, Oklahoma, died Monday afternoon, August 20, 2012, at his home at the age of 81 years.

Rollin William Vickery was born on April 3, 1931, in Wichita, Kansas, to Ward Rollin and Veda Helene (Zirkle) Vickery. He grew up in Wichita and attended Wichita East High School from which he graduated in 1949. He furthered his education by attending Kansas State University where he received a bachelor degree in animal science before completing his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1955. On May 29, 1955, he entered the United States Army and on June 4, 1955, he married Loretha Marie Allen in Topeka, Kansas, and they settled in Chicago, Illinois, where he was stationed. He later transferred to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he attained the rank of First Lieutenant. Following his discharge on July 3, 1957, they moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma, where he joined Blackwell Animal Clinic as a veterinarian. He worked at the clinic until 1975 when he entered private practice and established 7V Ranch which he operated until the time of his death. His wife preceded him in death on January 27, 2001, and he later married Ann Morgan on April 10, 2004.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. As a boy Rollin achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and his scouting activities continued into adulthood. He served as Scout Master for Troop 34 of the First United Methodist Church for over fifteen years and served as scouting coordinator for over thirty years. He served on the Executive Board of the Will Rogers Council Boy Scouts for thirty-nine years. In 1974 he was awarded the coveted Silver Beaver Award. He attended many camps, jamborees and other scouting activities. Other community involvement included Director of First National Bank in Blackwell, Vice President of the Braman School Board, Secretary-Treasurer for the Blackwell Rural Water Board, Director of the Blackwell Livestock Auction and Blackwell Regional Hospital Board. He also held membership in the Oklahoma Cattleman's Association and Oklahoma Veterinarian Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Vickery of Blackwell; two daughters, Gwen McFaden of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Janell Davis of Derby, Kansas; three sons, Brent Vickery of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Brook Vickery of Rosemount, Minnesota, and Curtis Vickery of Edmond, Oklahoma; a sister, Lucretia Ottaway of Wichita, Kansas; a brother, W. Dean Vickery of Wichita, Kansas; and seven grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Kent Vickery.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 24th in the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Pam Cottrill and Rev. Robert Montgomery officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. in the Old Mission Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.

The family will greet friends during a visitation time on Thursday evening, August 23rd, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Casketbearers will be Steve Shriver, Jerry Ramey, Claude Hiatt, Garrett Haskins, Larry Miller, Rodney Barby, Bob Morgan and Dale Wooderson. Honorary casketbearers will be Tommy Shriver, J. R. Ramey, Jimmy Hiatt, Ross Hiatt, Dale Allen, Larry Cannon, John Dale, Boy Scout Troop #34, and the Friendship Sunday School Class.

A memorial has been established in his honor with the First United Methodist Church Scout Troop or Sanctuary Choir or Hospice of North Central Oklahoma in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
