Robert Daniel (R.D.) Congram formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Sunday December 25, 2011, in the Memory Care Facility at Villas of Sunny Acres in Thornton, Colorado, at the age of 96 years.
R.D. was born November 27, 1915 in Eddy, Oklahoma to Robert L. and Madge I. (Hannegan) Congram. The family moved to Blackwell around 1920, where R.D. attended Blackwell schools – graduating from Blackwell High School in 1934. He went on to further his education at Northern Oklahoma Junior College, graduating with an Associate's Degree in 1936.
R.D. commenced his World War II Army service in 1942, serving as a security guard, clerk and classification specialist – achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant with the 1257th Service Command Unit. His primary assignment was Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he met Irene Kunda, who had enlisted in the Women's Army Corps. The two were married, after their discharge from the service, on September 6, 1947.
Back in Blackwell, R.D. commenced work for Consolidated Gas Utilities Corporation, later Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company (Arkla). He served Arkla in several roles, including management of the Blackwell warehouse. He retired after 34 years of loyal service.
R.D. and Irene were active members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. R.D. also was a member of the Russell Litchfield Post #7 of the American Legion, and Blackwell Elks Club. Hunting and fishing the fields and rivers of Northern Oklahoma were also an enjoyable part of R.D.'s life.
Irene preceded his death this past October. Brother Howard, and sister, Elaine Stafford, also preceded him in death. He is survived by son, Tony, and wife Amal; and grandsons, Andy, Alex and Antony all of Colorado, and nephews Steve and Stan Stafford of Colorado.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Blackwell on Saturday, December 31st at 10:00 a.m. A viewing and gathering will be held at Roberts & Son Funeral Home on Friday, December 30th at 5:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary vigil at 7:00 p.m. Father Larok Obwana Martin of St. Joseph's Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Blackwell Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial for Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (Alzheimer's disease research) has been established in his honor in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
