Obituary

Richard Glenn McCurry of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday afternoon, November 20, 2009, at his home in Blackwell at the age of 83 years.

Richard Glenn McCurry was born on July 18, 1926, in Burbank, Oklahoma, to Andrew Roland and Ida Louise (Newton) McCurry. He grew up in Pawhuska until the age of seven when he moved with his family to Blackwell and attended Blackwell Public Schools graduating from Blackwell High School. While in school he worked for the Hazel-Atlas Glass Plant. Following high school he attended Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater for a year and worked at the Blackwell Zinc Company. He later began working part time as a special delivery agent for the Blackwell Post Office. He married Vera Ann Barrows on November 1, 1957, in Blackwell and they settled in Blackwell where he became a full-time mail carrier for thirty years, delivering the same route for twenty-five of those years. He also raised sheep and hogs. Following retirement from the post office, they traveled in their R.V. and spent the winter months in Aransas Pass, Texas. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell. He also held membership in the Good Sam Campers, FFA Booster Club, REACT, Friends of the Land Run, Grange and National Association of Letter Carriers which he served as past president.

He is survived by his wife, Vera McCurry of Blackwell, Oklahoma; four sons, Richard Patrick McCurry of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Michael Glenn McCurry of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Thomas Andrew McCurry of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and Douglas Eugene McCurry of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a brother, Bob McCurry of Salem, Oregon; fifteen grandchildren, Stephanie Skaggs, Lisa Appleby, Holly McKee, James W. McCurry, Patricia McCurry, Jeanette McCurry, Wes McCurry, Miranda Patterson, Desiree Hankla, Amanda Rowlett, Andrew McCurry, Kelli McCurry, Rachael Herrin, James K. McCurry and Jacob McCurry; and fourteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Newt McCurry; two granddaughters, Laurie Spencer and Jasmine McCurry; and a grandson, John Thomas McCurry.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 24th in the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Kristen L. Brown of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Dennis Bonewell, Terry Hale, Aron Lawrence, Gary Fultz, Kevin Zimmerschied and Frank Barrows. Honorary casketbearers will be Mickey Redding, Philip Logan, Don Briggs, Gary Leslie and Dale McBride.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
