Long time Blackwell resident Ray Lewis Davis passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his family on June 27, 2008. Ray fought a long battle with Alzheimer's with dignity and humor, the last three years under the twenty-four hour care of his four sons and granddaughter, Elise.
Ray was born on November 30, 1926, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, to Walter Ellis and Mabel F. (Murray) Davis. Ray moved to Blackwell as an infant and graduated from Blackwell High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was discharged in 1946. He then attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1951.
Ray married JoAnne Green on June 5, 1951, in Wakita, Oklahoma. To this union were born four sons, Ray Lewis, Jr., Eric Ellis, Richard Arthur and Derek Vincent. The day after the fourth boy was born, Ray was greeted by Harold Hutton with, "Hello, Father Flannigan!"
Ray started his business career with "Ray's Restaurant" next to the Rivoli Theater in the early 1950's. He went on to co-own Blackwell Realty with Bill Massey and later, Ray Davis Real Estate. Ray was elected to one term in the Oklahoma Legislature where he sponsored the bill that built the highway from I-35 to Ponca City.
Ray's greatest joy was to make people happy. This was done through his humor, but mostly through his cooking. He was considered by many to be the "second best cook in Kay County."
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his R.L, Rick, Dick and wife Lori, and Derek Davis, all of Edmond, Oklahoma. Also surviving are grandchildren, Elise Davis of Oklahoma City, Joel and Anna Davis of Edmond, Grayson Davis of Arizona, and Chris and Rad Davis of Edmond; a great grandson, Jackson Davis of Oklahoma City; and a brother, Larry Lee Davis of Wichita, Kansas.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 1st, in the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Larry Adkisson officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
The grandchildren of Ray Davis will serve as casketbearers.
The family of Ray Davis would like to thank the Norman Veterans Center for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Amvets in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
