Rachel Kathryn Courtney of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at her home in Blackwell at the age of 89 years.

Rachel Kathryn Courtney was born on May 17, 1923, in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, to Louis and Martha Pearle (Boarman) Surber. In 1933 she moved with her family to Norman, Oklahoma, where she attended Norman Public Schools. Following graduation from Norman High School, she continued her education at the University of Oklahoma. She married Vernor Earl Courtney on April 4, 1942, in Norman and in 1947 they moved to Blackwell to make their home. She worked as a teller for the First National Bank and supervised the express bank until her retirement following eighteen years of service Her husband preceded her in death on November 4, 2011, and she continued to make Blackwell her home. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church serving with the United Methodist Women's Service Group and Sunday School. She was a long time member of the American Business Women's Association serving in the various offices including president. In 1980 she was elected Woman of the Year. She enjoyed Green Thumb Garden Club and several bridge clubs. She was also active in the American Red Cross and Blackwell Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, Michael L. Courtney and wife Phyllis of Ft. Collins, Colorado; two daughters, Melinda Muck and husband Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Patricia Williams and husband Jim of Owasso, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Jennifer Courtney Russell and husband Josh of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Matthew C. Williams of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Courtney Michele Muck of Nashville, Tennessee, and Bradley Allan Muck and wife Allison of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and a great granddaughter, Peyton Grace Russell of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Louis L. Surber Jr.; and a sister, Jacquita Surber Talley.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 12th in the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Pam Cottrill officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Brad Muck, Matthew Williams, Josh Russell, Phil Moss, Tom Talley and Paul Bowman. Honorary casketbearers will be Piccola Hudsonpillar, Louis Gose, June Gose, Joyce Becker, Becky Hutton, Eva Wooderson, Sharon Mitchell and Charlene Bathurst.

A memorial has been established in her honor with the First United Methodist Church in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
