Obituary

Patty Lou Cowan Wheeler

Patty Lou Cowan Wheeler, age 94, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri. Patty was born in Duncan, Oklahoma, to James Paul Cowan and Floy Lou Franks Cowan. She was raised alongside her older brother, Billy James Cowan. Her parents and brother preceded her in death.

Early in her life, Patty lived with her family in various locations across Oklahoma and Texas. During World War 2 she attended Wink High School in West Texas where her parents worked at Pyote Army Airfield. After World War 2, her family moved to Blackwell, OK and attended Blackwell High School. She was selected as Wrestling Queen and met a young man on the wrestling team named Dale before graduating in 1949.

Patty married the love of her life, Dale Edward Wheeler, in 1950. Together they built a home centered on family, faith, and hard work. Patty and Dale lived in various locations throughout Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming raising 3 children along the way. However, they always came back to Blackwell. Patty had strong roots in Blackwell, Oklahoma, a community she loved deeply and where she built a lifetime of friendships and memories.

Patty devoted her life to her family as a homemaker, creating a warm and welcoming home where meals were shared, laughter was abundant, and everyone was made to feel loved. She had a gift for creativity and spent many hours quilting, sewing, painting, crafting, cooking, and gardening. Her hands were rarely still, and her projects often became treasured gifts for family and friends.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church. She participated in the Kay County Home Extension Club, where members worked on projects that benefited their community and proudly entered their creations in the Kay County Fair. Patty was a multiple blue-ribbon winner at the fair, a testament to her skill and dedication. She also belonged to a local quilting club and lovingly made lap quilts for residents of nursing homes, bringing comfort and warmth to many.

More than anything, Patty loved her family. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, celebrating milestones, sharing stories, and keeping family traditions alive.

Dale preceded her in death in 2005, as did their two sons, Michael Dale Wheeler in 2025 and Anthony Mark Wheeler in 2002

She is survived by her daughter, Connie Sue Morton and her husband Jack Morton of Edmond, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law Kathryn Wolf Wheeler of Kansas City, Missouri; and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her grandchildren include granddaughter Kerri Lynn Morton Speights and husband Gregory Lynn Speights and their children Derek Tyler Speights deceased, Tyler Jordan Speights, Brandon Kaleb Speights, and Brooke Ashly Speights; grandson Jamey Allan Morton and wife

Crystal Geree Wald Morton and children Coit Alan Morton, Ashton Reed Morton, and Makenna Lynne Morton; grandson Justin Paul Wheeler and wife Vanessa Garcia Wheeler and children Wesley Paul Wheeler and Emily Ryan Wheeler; grandson Christopher Glen Wheeler and wife Sara Michelle Wheeler and children Kaleigh Paige Wheeler, Aimey Faith Wheeler, Kaleb Alex Wheeler deceased and Sadie Grace Wheeler; and grandson Wolf Michael Wheeler.

Patty will be remembered for her wit, creativity, generosity, and the quiet way she cared for others. She left behind a legacy of love woven into the lives of those around her through the children and grandchildren she raised, the quilts she stitched, the gardens she tended, and the meals she prepared.

Viewing will be held Friday, March 13, 2026, at Roberts Funeral Home in Blackwell, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church in Blackwell, Oklahoma located at 204 S A St, Blackwell, OK 74631. Burial will follow at Blackwell Cemetery.
