Opal Dorothy Severson of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died early Thursday morning, September 20, 2012, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 95 years.
Opal Dorothy Severson was born on April 6, 1917, in Sumner County, Kansas, to George and Nellie Morris. She grew up in southern Kansas and attended Sumner County Rural Schools. Following her education she worked as a housekeeper for various families in the area. She married Lloyd W. Severson in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and they settled in Kay County where she served her family as a homemaker. She later worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Newkirk Nursing Home for over fifteen years. Her husband preceded her in death on January 20, 1976. Shortly after his death she retired and moved to Blackwell to make her home. She loved various handcrafts, including crocheting, knitting and making clothes for her family. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Lois LaBrue of Arkansas City, Kansas, and Betty Fowler of Barnsdall, Oklahoma; a son, Jim Severson of Edmond, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Arley, George, Warren, Bud and Bill Morris; and five sisters, Grace Tompkins, Leatha Norris, Bessie Forebeck, Wanda Morris and an infant sister at birth.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 24th in the Braman Cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Bookout of the First Free Will Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Braman Cemetery.
Serving as honorary casketbearers will be the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Opal Severson.
A memorial has been established in her honor with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for cancer research in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
