Obituary

Opal Porter of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died early Wednesday morning, October 7, 2009, in the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell at the age of 91 years.

Opal Porter was born, the ninth of eleven children, on September 14, 1918, in rural Cleburne, Texas, to William Henry and Iola Callie (Mustin) Bonner. She grew up in the Ft. Worth, Texas, area attending various schools graduating from Poly Technical High School in 1939. She then furthered her education by attending business college in Ft. Worth. She married Carl Frank Porter Jr. on August 5, 1943, in Ft. Worth and they settled in various communities where her husband was stationed in the military. Following his discharge in 1946, they moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma, where she served her family as a homemaker. In 1959 she began working at Hunt's Department Store in Blackwell. She retired in 1966 and returned to the home to serve her family. Her husband preceded her in death in 1986 and she continued to make Blackwell her home. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and the TEL Sunday School Class. She also taught Sunday School for over fifty years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, Sudoku puzzles, gardening and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Ronnie Porter and wife Margaret of Blackwell, Oklahoma; three sisters, Vallie Sanders of Dallas, Texas, Olene Sanders of Caddo Mills, Texas, and Myrle Fletcher of McKinney, Texas; three grandchildren, Scott Wilson and wife, Theresa of Vancouver, Washington, Tammie Little and husband Paul of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Brandi Dembowski and husband Ryan of Lincoln, Nebraska; and great grandchildren, Ryan and Carson Wilson of Vancouver, Washington, Bryce and Payton Little of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Jordan and Carly Dembowski of Lincoln, Nebraska.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Carla Wilson; three brothers, Fay, Odis and J. T.; four sisters, Trula, Jessi Mae, Johnnie and Kathrine; and a great grandson, Matthew Little.

Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 12th in the First Baptist Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Rick Longcrier of First Baptist Church in Miami, Oklahoma, officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Serving as casketbearers will be Paul Little, Scott Wilson, Ryan Dembowski, Jim Wilson, Randy Sanders and Wes Crowe. Honorary casketbearers will be Carson Wilson, Ryan Wilson, Jordan Dembowski, Carly Dembowski, Payton Little, Bryce Little and the TEL Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.

A memorial has been established with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for cancer research in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
