Obituary

Newton Rolland McCurry formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at the Integris Bass Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma, at the age of 84 years.

Newton Rolland McCurry was born on July 1, 1924, in Fairfax, Oklahoma, to Andrew Rolland and Ida Louise (Newton) McCurry. He grew up in Burbank, Oklahoma, until he was six years old at which time he moved with his family to Pawhuska, Oklahoma. After living in Pawhuska for a brief time they moved to Blackwell to make their home and he attended Blackwell High School graduating in 1943. Following his education he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp as a PBY flight engineer in the Air Sea Rescue during WWII and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He was very appreciative and honored to serve this country. He married Betty Jo (Hiten) Triplett in Blackwell, Oklahoma, on April 7, 1945. They made their home in Blackwell where Newton started a career with the United States Postal Service as a route carrier for many years before becoming superintendant of mail. They moved to Nowata, Oklahoma, in 1977 and lived there until his retirement in 1981 when they moved to Lake Eufaula. On April 15, 1999, his wife preceded him in death and he continued to make Lake Eufaula his home. In 2004 he moved to Enid, Oklahoma, to be near his daughter. Newton was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Enid, Oklahoma, and enjoyed the few years he could attend the Friendship Sunday School Class and Sunday morning services. His special interests were photography, golf and fishing and he loved dearly the fact there was no music he could not dance to. His stays in Greenbrier Residence and Sterling House Assisted Care facilities provided him many dance partners. Newton's friendly smile and his sharp sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He will forever be loved as our dad, papa and good friend.

He is survived by one daughter, Linda Sawyers and husband Dennis of Enid, Oklahoma; one stepson, David Triplett of Checotah, Oklahoma, two brothers, Glenn McCurry of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Robert McCurry of Keiser, Oregon; five grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services are set for 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 3rd at the Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. Susan Southall of the First United Methodist Church in Enid, Oklahoma, officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
