Obituary

Newman Cain Hicks of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Thursday evening, October 7, 2010, in the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell at the age of 90 years.

Newman Cain Hicks was born on August 1, 1920, in Carnegie, Oklahoma, to John Ralston and Geneva Thelma (Corzine) Hicks. He grew up in Carnegie attending Carnegie Public Schools graduating in 1938. He furthered his education by attending Carnegie Junior College before attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He then moved to Oklahoma City and attended Business College before joining the United States Navy serving as a Chief Petty Officer during World War II. Following his discharge in December of 1946 he returned to the family farm near Carnegie. He later began working for the Soil Conservation Service as a soil conservation technician. He married LaWauna Green on December 11, 1955, in Mountain View, Oklahoma, and they settled in Clinton, Oklahoma. In 1974 they moved to Blackwell to make their home and he continued working in soil conservation until his retirement in 1988. His wife preceded him in death on January 10, 2009, and he continued to make Blackwell his home. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and served as a deacon. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking, reading western novels and attending the various activities of his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Inmon of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Stephanie Hicks of Denton, Texas; a sister, June Wells of Jasper, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m., Monday, October 11th in the First Baptist Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Chester Ward of Ponca City, Oklahoma, officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Chris Fetters, Richard Jernigan, Charles Inmon, Mike Creech, Mark Meador and Earl Webb. The grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as honorary casketbearers.

A memorial has been established in his honor with the First Baptist Church in Blackwell in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
