Myron Harold Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Thursday afternoon, September 16, 2010, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 92 years.
Myron Harold Smith was born on April 8, 1918, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Roy Haynes and Susan Alta (Webb) Smith. He grew up in Blackwell attending Blackwell Public Schools. Following his education he began working for the Blackwell Zinc Company on the furnace. He married Lena Marie Bonewell on April 24, 1940, in South Kansas and they settled in Blackwell where he continued working at the smelter for thirty-eight years retiring as a foreman. He also worked as a truck driver for Fry Fertilizer in Blackwell and drove a school bus and taxi cab. Myron and Marie enjoyed traveling to Colorado and spent twenty-three winters in South Texas where they caught many fish. His wife preceded him in death on November 27, 2007, and he continued to make Blackwell his home. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of the JOY Group. He also spent eighteen years coaching little league baseball in Blackwell and had the joy of coaching his sons and watching his grandchildren participate in various athletic activities. He also held membership in the I.O.O.F. Lodge and enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes and watching the Chicago Cubs and Oklahoma Sooners compete.
He is survived by his sons, Richard Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Ronnie Smith and wife B.J. of Braman, Oklahoma; a brother, Eugene Smith of Midwest City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Dary Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Tara Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma; step-grandchildren, Donnie Collins and wife Jill of Wichita, Kansas, and Tracy Collins of Blackwell, Oklahoma; great grandchildren, Shelby, Hunter, Madden, Riley and Kierstin Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma; and step-great grandchildren, Destiny, Desperado, Blake and Lila Mae Collins.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 21st in the First Baptist Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Rick Longcrier of First Baptist Church in Miami, Oklahoma, officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
