Obituary

Michael Ray "Mickey" Phillips of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Tuesday morning, April 18, 2017, at his home at the age of 76 years.

Michael Ray "Mickey" Phillips was born on August 23, 1940, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, to Max Owen and Donna Mae (Rucker) Phillips. As a young boy he moved with his family to Blackwell where he grew and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1960. Following his education he entered the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on February 25, 1966. He returned to Blackwell and married Barbara Rhea and began working for the Blackwell Fire Department. After thirty-four years of service he retired as the Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshall. He married Billie Louise Wood on May 3, 1974, in Blackwell and they made Blackwell their home. Mickey also worked as a storm spotter for Kay County and served as a Kay County reserve sheriff for over eight years. For thirty years he worked part time for Roberts and Son Funeral Home as a funeral and ambulance attendant. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist church where he served as cameraman for the local services. He also held membership in the Oklahoma Independent Amateur Radio Club where he served the organization as president. Other memberships include the Kay County Radio Club in Ponca City and the Oklahoma Retired Firefighters Association. He enjoyed photography, especially producing various kinds of videos.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Phillips of Blackwell; a son, Mike Phillips of Tulsa; two daughters, Terri Phillips of Ohio and Christy Phillips of Moore; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 22nd in the Immanuel Baptist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Matt Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Serving as honorary casketbearers will be the Blackwell Fire Department and the OIDAR Club.

A memorial has been established in his honor with Christmas for Kids in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
