LaVerta Jean Coleman of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Tuesday morning, November 10, 2009, in the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 82 years.
LaVerta Jean Coleman was born on March 11, 1927, in Woodward, Oklahoma, to Lewis E. and Thelma E. (Dyas) Keltch. As a young girl she moved with her family to Blackwell where she grew up attending Blackwell Public Schools and graduating from Blackwell High School. Following her education she worked for the Blackwell Cleaners. She married Otis Coleman in 1948 in Blackwell and she continued working at the cleaners and also began working as a waitress at various restaurants. Her husband preceded her in death and she later married Joe Coleman in 1990 in Blackwell and they continued to make Blackwell their home. She also worked as a school crossing guard on South Main in Blackwell for many years. Her husband preceded her in death in the late 1990's. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blackwell. She was a member of the Eastern Star for fifty-four years and held membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary for fifty years. She enjoyed crocheting and watching professional football.
She is survived by her sister, Pat Jones of Newkirk, Oklahoma; and two brothers, George F. Keltch of Dallas, Texas, and Lewis E. Keltch Jr. of Norman, Oklahoma.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Emma Barber; and a brother, Charles F. Keltch.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 13th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Steven Mallory of Grace Episcopal Church in Ponca City officiating. Burial will follow in the Lamont Cemetery in Lamont, Oklahoma.
Members of the Eastern Star will participate in the service and serve as honorary casketbearers.
