Kent was born in Blackwell, Oklahoma, September 13, 1919. After graduating in 1937 from Blackwell High School, he worked as an engineer on various rural electric lines, starting with Kay Electric Cooperative in Blackwell and continuing his work across Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas. As a naval officer, beginning in 1940, Kent served posts in Ottumwa, Iowa, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before being stationed in Okinawa during the Pacific Theater. During World War II Kent met Eleanor Wickness in Washington D.C., where both worked for the Department of Navy. In 1961 he received his Chartered Life Underwriter Degree and was active in the Life Underwriter Association on both the county and state level, serving on the state association Board of Directors for about 40 years. He received many company and industry awards throughout the years. Kent operated his agency until 2000, when he retired and the couple moved to Tulsa.
Kent served as president of the Blackwell Kiwanis Club, where he achieved forty-six years perfect attendance, held numerous offices in the First United Methodist Church, and headed fund drives for almost every organization in Blackwell, including The United Way, Red Cross, Boy Scouts, and March of Dimes. Kent also served as Chairman of both the Industrial Foundation and the Industrial Authority. In the 1950s Kent was Cub Master for the Lincoln School Cub Pack. He belonged to the American Legion and VFW.
