Josephine Marie (Colbert) Stockton of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013, in the Via Christi Westminster Village in Ponca City at the age of 102 years.
Josephine Marie (Colbert) Stockton was born on January 19, 1911, northwest of Newkirk, Oklahoma, in the Middleton Community, to Carl and Emma (Van Pelt) Colbert. She grew up in the Dale and Newkirk communities and attended Newkirk Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1931. Following her education she worked for Snyder's Drug Store in Newkirk. During these years, she took an art class and developed into quite an artist, especially to her family. She also spent this time designing the family clothing. She married Oscar Stockton on November 16, 1940, and they made Newkirk their home. When her father became ill, the family moved to the ranch near Maple City, Kansas, and after four years they returned to Oklahoma. Upon their arrival they settled on a wheat farm northwest of Braman, Oklahoma, and engaged in a farming operation until her husband's retirement, at which time they moved their home to Blackwell. Her husband preceded her in death on March 4, 1998, and she later moved to Ponca City to make her home. Josephine was foremost a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was an active member of the Home Demonstration Club. She also held membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Braman United Methodist Church where she participated with the women's quilting guild. She later became a member of the Albright United Methodist Church in Ponca City. She served as a volunteer for the Braman Schools and the Kay County Election Board. She won many awards on her baking, gardening and tailoring. She was a devout Christian lady.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda K. Willey and her husband, the late Charles Willey of Owasso, Oklahoma, and Sandra M. Romine and husband Ritchie of Ponca City; grandchildren, Amy D. Head and husband Andrew of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Andy Romine of Denver, Colorado, and Michael W. Willey and wife Lisa of Modesto, California; and great grandchildren, Ashly and Ally Head of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Megan Willey of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Dominic and Heather Willey of Modesto, California. She is also survived by several cousins, Betty Buggy and husband Bill of Santa Rosa, California, Thelma Michaelson of Blackwell, Belvia Rich and husband Don of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Don Appleman and wife Joyce of Ponca City.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Harry O. Colbert and Clifton Colbert.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 16th in the Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery in Ponca City with Chaplain Tom Howard with Hospice of North Central Oklahoma officiating.
Honorary casketbearers will be grandson Andy Romine, grandson Mike Willey, grandson-in-law Andrew Head, and nephew Fred Colbert.
