Obituary

Josephine Pearl Hampton formerly of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, departed this life on February 3, 2010, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the age of 88 years.

Josephine Pear Hampton was born on January 13, 1922, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Otto Jacob and Ruth (Hohmann) Moyer. She spent her early years on the family farm in Deer Creek, Oklahoma, but became a city girl at the age of thirteen when her father became county agent in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She attended Oklahoma A. & M. in Stillwater, Oklahoma, but dropped out to marry Isaac Paul Hampton of Yale, Oklahoma, on September 6, 1943. She was the quintessential supportive wife and mother, relocating the family several times before settling in Huntsville, Texas, where her husband taught at a local college.

Josephine finished her mathematics degree in the 1960's during the same time that her children were in college. As a child of the Great Depression, thrift and self-sufficiency were a large part of her core, and she made much of her own clothing and that of her family as well as outfitting the various camping vehicles that she and Isaac traveled in every summer.

Josephine was raised Mennonite but attended Methodist services all her adult life. In Colorado Springs she was a member of the Wilson United Methodist Church, where she served in the church library.

She is survived by her daughter, Elisabeth Weston and husband Rubin of Xenia, Ohio; her son, Lawrence D. Hampton of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren, Willam Fordham and wife Connie of Palmer, Alaska, and Wendy Peitzmeier and husband Glenn of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and great grandchildren, Andrew Benson and Kaitlyn Peitzmeier of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Articulate, thoughtful, unassuming and quiet, she was widely respected and loved. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 9th in the Bayard Cemetery in Deer Creek, Oklahoma, with the Rev. Robert Foos of Nardin Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Bayard Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
