Obituary

Jo Ann (Via) Martindale, 95, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at Legends at Mingo Road in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Jo Ann Martindale was born November 23, 1930, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Archibald O. Via and Bertha Lucille (Bottenfield) Via. She was the youngest of four children. She attended Park Grade School, Lovett Junior High, and graduated from Blackwell High School with the class of 1948. She married Paul Rodney (“Rod”) Martindale on April 24, 1948, and they made their home in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where Rod was attending Oklahoma State A&M.

After a few years, Rod took a position with Phillips 66 Petroleum Company and moved his family to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, their headquarters, where they made their home for the next several years. During that time, Jo was a stay-at-home Mom but later went to work for the 66 Federal Credit Union as a teller. In Bartlesville, she was busy supporting her children and their activities whether in school or at First Baptist Church, where the family was active as members. She was very active in the music program at FBC and was a faithful member of the Adult Choir, and directed youth and children’s choirs. She also directed the Jane Phillips Sorority Chorus, as well as the Bartlesville Community Theater where she had leading roles in many of their musicals. Jo was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf with her husband, friends, and children. Her support of her family, especially children, was unending. After her children were out of the home, Rod accepted a new position in Denver, Colorado, where a whole new “retired” life began for her. She continued to be very active in music and sport events. She volunteered in many areas and became an avid golfer and skier! They were also very active in a dance club where their reputation as “jitterbuggers” was well known! Grandchildren began to come into the picture, and she became “Meme” to all of them. They loved having family and friends visit in Denver and developed friendships that lasted their entire lives. Eventually, due to family needs, they returned to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where they remained very active in the community and in following Oklahoma State University athletics. Jo fulfilled a dream of leading the Oklahoma State University Marching Band before her 80th birthday and did so for their 2010 Homecoming Parade (using her experience as a drum major for Blackwell High School). Jo was a charter member of the Stillwater Community Singers where she not only sang, but also directed the Women’s Ensemble. She became an avid volunteer at the Karman Korner Shop for Hospice Care, and took advantage of other volunteer opportunities.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Rod; her parents; a brother, James Carey “Bud” Via; and 2 sisters, Jean Via Macioce of Springfield, Missouri, and Virginia Lee Via Huckett of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

She is survived by her son, L. Craig Martindale of Lily, Kentucky; her daughter, Kerry Ann Wagoner and husband, Robert, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her sons, A. Kent Martindale and R. Kirk Martindale, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and extended family.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Faith Baptist Church in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, with Rev. Robert Wagoner officiating; burial to follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stillwater Community Singers c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
