Jerry Lee Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday evening, November 13, 2009, at his home in Blackwell at the age of 65 years.
Jerry Lee Smith was born on August 13, 1944, in Bokchito, Oklahoma, to Herbert and Helen (Brewer) Smith. He grew up in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, attending Tonkawa Public Schools. Following his education he entered the United States Army in 1962 serving in Germany and Vietnam. Following his discharge in 1970 he moved to Enid, Oklahoma, and began playing music with various bands. He married Vicki Jo Lively on May 15, 1971, and they settled in Enid for a short time before moving to Blackwell where he began working for the Blackwell Police Department until 1977. He then began working for Ramsey's and in 1986 he returned to the Blackwell Police Department until 1991. He then worked for Kay County District 3 until 1999. He enjoyed playing the steel guitar, spending time with his grandchildren and collecting guns and knives.
He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Smith and fiancé Mark Freeman of Blackwell, Oklahoma; two brothers, Wayne Smith and wife LaDonna of Rogers, Arkansas, and Kenneth Smith and wife Liz of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a sister, Sue Crow and husband Jay of Ponca City, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Shelbie Smith of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Zackary Green of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Rilee Smith of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; good friend, Joe Sommerer of Germany; and numerous other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki; his parents; and a son, Travis.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 17th in the Blackwell Cemetery with James W. Roberts of Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Heart Research in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
