Jerry Russell Ellis, formerly of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, died Wednesday morning, September 7, 2016, in the Weatherford Living Center in Weatherford, Oklahoma, at the age of 74 years.
Jerry was born on September 13, 1941, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Charles and Verna (Wheeler) Ellis. He attended the Blackwell Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1960. He was a member of the All-state football team in 1959. After graduating from high school, he signed to play football at Oklahoma University. He attended Oklahoma University for one year before transferring to Panhandle State University where he played football, golf and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Industrial Education. He was an All American running back while playing for Panhandle State University. His main employment throughout his life was working as a superintendent in the oilfield and construction. He enjoyed playing slow pitch softball and golf. He loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He was a very generous and humble man his whole life, helping many people in need.
He is survived by one daughter, Dianne Ellis Humes and husband Chris of Katy, Texas; one son, David Ellis and wife Susan of Weatherford, Oklahoma; one sister, Twila June Ellis of Paragould, Arkansas; one brother, Chuck Ellis of Paragould, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Hayden Humes and Molly Humes of Katy, Texas, Tyler Ellis and wife Annie of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Cale Ellis of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Colby Ellis of Miami, Oklahoma, and Trent Ellis of Edmond, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, Evey and Jerry Everett Ellis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 14th in the Blackwell Cemetery, Blackwell, Oklahoma, with James W. Roberts officiating.
Honorary casketbearers will be Marion Finley, Gary Davis, Larry Davis and Jim Rodgers.
A memorial has been established with the Andy Ellis Trust in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 West Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
