Obituary

Jack Winfred Pemberton of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Sunday evening, April 24, 2011, in the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 89 years.

Jack Winfred Pemberton was born on January 20, 1922, in Fitzhugh, Oklahoma, to Lonnie Winfred and Frances Katherine (McDonald) Pemberton. As a young boy he moved with his family to Blackwell before locating in Dilworth, Oklahoma. While in elementary school he attended Rock Rural School and Dilworth High School graduating in 1940. Following his education he entered the C.C. Camp in Colorado before entering the United States Army Air Corps on October 22, 1942. While in the military he served with the 1328th Army Air Force Unit during World War II in the Burma-India Theater and flew supplies over the "hump." Following his discharge on January 4, 1946, he married Nelda Catheline Cassidy on March 7, 1946, in Wichita, Kansas, and they settled in Braman, Oklahoma. In 1950 the family moved to Blackwell and he worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Blackwell Zinc Company. In 1969 they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and he worked for a short time for the City of Green Mountain Falls. He later began working in the water department for the City of Colorado Springs and retired after seventeen years in 1987. In 2001 they returned to Blackwell to make their home. He was a member of the Blackwell Church of Christ and held a life membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed playing golf.

He is survived by his wife, Nelda Pemberton of Blackwell; two sons, Donald J. Pemberton of Newkirk, Oklahoma, and Brad Pemberton of Denver, Colorado; two sisters, Nelda Ruth Starr of Breckenridge, Texas, and Peggy Lawson of Newkirk, Oklahoma; a brother, Donald Pemberton of Browning, Montana; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and eight step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Loyce McDaris and Billie Trenary.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 28th in the Blackwell Church of Christ with Lanny Jobe officiating. Burial will follow in the Braman Cemetery with military rites performed by the United States Army from Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.

Casketbearers will be Brad Pemberton, Don J. Pemberton, Joseph Pemberton, Champ Cain, Tim Walker and Ross Hiatt.

A memorial has been established in his honor with the Blackwell Church of Christ in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
