Irene Edith Congram formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, in the St. Anthony Hospital North in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 90 years.
Irene was born march 19, 1921, in Westfield , Massachusetts, daughter of Anthony J. and Serafina Kunda. She graduated from Easthampton High School and then attended Smith College. She worked for United Elastic Corp, as a secretary before enlisting in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She was a payroll clerk for three WAC detachments at Tilton General Hospital in Fort Dix, New Jersey. She met R. D. Congram while in service and they were married in Oklahoma on September 6, 1947. She worked for Continental Oil Company (later Conoco) in Ponca City from 1947 to May 1, 1985 when she retired as Placement Counselor, Personnel- Human Resources. She was a charter member of the Ponca City Desk & Derrick Club and Conoco Retirees' Association. Irene also was an active member of St. Joseph's Altar Society, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and also enjoyed volunteer activities with the Red Cross and Ladies Hospital Auxiliary in Blackwell.
Her parents; brothers, Anthony and Henry Kunda; and sister, Leonora Kunda preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband R.D.; a son, Tony, and wife Amal; and grandsons, Andy, Alex and Antony all of Colorado, along with two nephews living in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Joseph's Church, located at 3rd and Bridge Streets in Blackwell on Friday October 14th at 10:00 a.m. A viewing and gathering will be held at Roberts & Son Funeral Home on Thursday at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary vigil at 7:00 p.m. Father Larok Obwana Martin of St. Joseph's Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Blackwell Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial for Saint Joseph's Church of Blackwell has been established in her honor in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
