Helen M. Cowell of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Monday afternoon, August 24, 2009, at her home in Blackwell at the age of 85 years.
Helen M. Cowell was born on November 7, 1923, in Byron, Oklahoma, to Frank and Arzellie (McIntire) Beadman. She grew up in the Byron area. She married Clarence Bullard in 1942 and they settled in Cherokee, Oklahoma, where they owned and operated Bullard Roofing for twenty years. He preceded her in death in 1962. She later married Gene Hardgrave in 1964 in Blackwell, Oklahoma, and they traveled with Armour and Company until his retirement when they settled in Blackwell to make their home. He preceded her in death in 1984. She later met and married Bruce Walter in 1989 and three months later he preceded her in death. On August 30, 1992, she married Roy Cowell in Blackwell and they made Blackwell their home with winters spent in McAllen, Texas. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, sewing, camping and was a wonderful cook.
She is survived by her husband, Roy Cowell of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a daughter, Glenda Hardgrave Green and husband Donnie of Red Rock, Oklahoma; three sons, Jack Cowell and wife Glenda, Ronnie Cowell and Jerry Cowell all of Wellington, Kansas; four grandchildren, Julie Cervantes, Dr. Mark Green, Amy Boyd and husband Mike, and Stacey Harp and husband Billy; two great grandchildren, Adriana and Nicolas Cervantes; her sister, Rosalee Clepper of Fairfax, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Arlie and George Beadman; and five sisters, Flora Lee, Alta Dottever, Georgie Stauffacher, Nola Utterback and Dorothy Swarts.
Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 27th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell with the Rev. Kristen L. Brown of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Byron Cemetery in Byron, Oklahoma.
Casketbearers will be Dick Gisi, Tom Clepper, Jim Dandridge, Kevan Sterling, Bill Utterback and Larry Oller.
