Hazel Pauline Rowan of Blackwell, Oklahoma died Saturday, April 9, 2011, in the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell, Oklahoma, at the age of 91 years.
Hazel Pauline Rowan was born on August 31, 1919, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, to Walter and Georgia (Osburn) Boydston. She married David W. Hurst in August of 1934 in Seminole, Oklahoma. During World War II she worked in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, at a tent factory. She then moved to Blackwell during World War II while her husband was at war. Hazel worked at the Hazel Atlas Glass Plant for one year and a half while establishing her home. She was a loving mother to three girls, Joyce, Jean, and Betty, which she considered her most important life's work. She also worked in retail sales for several businesses in the Blackwell area including Browns Jewelry Store, Harvey's Grocery, Howards Discount Store, Moore's Department Store and Max Welch Auto Sales. In August of 1948 she married Merle A. Rowan in Medford, Oklahoma. Merle preceded her in death in July 1966. Later in life she gave excellent care for elderly in their homes, caring for them as if they were a member of her family. She was a prolific carpenter and hand made the entertainment center for her home. She also remodeled the kitchen reworking all the cabinets. She always said she loved the smell of new wood and was happiest with a hammer and saw in her hand. She loved her Sunday School class and its members.
Hazel is survived by three daughters, Joyce Fay Johnson of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Barbara Jean Morgan of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Betty Alice LaRue of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two stepsons, Merle Alan Rowan, Jr. and Michael Rowan; one sister, Opal Murphy; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and twenty-seven great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Orlan Boydston and Carl Boydston; and one sister, Jewel Randall.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 12th in the First Baptist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Glendon Sanders of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
Honorary casketbearers will be Frank Dyer, Dr. Bob Morgan, Max Claybaker, Bob LaRue, Ray Anderson, Rick Buesing, Mike Creech and Mary Creech.
Casketbearers will be David Buesing, Mike Buesing, Douglas Johnson, Jeff LaRue, Glen Johnson, Jr. and Adam Anderson.
A memorial has been established with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Alzheimer's Research and the Blackwell Animal Shelter in c/o of Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 West Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
