Obituary

George Morgan of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Sunday afternoon, October 18, 2009, in the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell at the age of 89 years.

George Morgan was born on October 14, 1920, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Adonijah Lewis and Vada Ann (Hall) Morgan. He grew up in Blackwell attending Blackwell Public Schools. He married Nevalyn Chloie Taber on November 23, 1939, in Blackwell and they settled in Blackwell except for a year in 1947 when they moved to Brewster, Washington. His working days began when he was a greenskeeper and caddy for the Blackwell Golf Course as a young boy. He then worked for Raffety Grocery from 1936 until 1940 and for the Blackwell Zinc Company from 1940 until 1946. In 1948 he began working for the City of Blackwell in the Blackwell Police Department as a patrolman before advancing to acting chief of police for 1952 until 1954. Beginning in 1954 he was promoted to assistant chief and in May of 1957 was named chief of police. He served as police chief until 1979 when he retired as one of the longest serving chiefs in Oklahoma state history. He also served the City of Blackwell as director of Severe Weather Operations for fifty four years and Civil Defense director for fourteen years. His wife preceded him in death on April 27, 1994, and he continued to make Blackwell his home. He was an active member of the Blackwell Church of Christ where he served for over fifty years as deacon, elder and Sunday School teacher. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club, past president and past board member of the Blackwell AARP Chapter, and served as president and board member for the Top of Oklahoma Historical Society. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynda Richards and husband Shannon of Blackwell, Oklahoma; two sons, Terry Morgan and wife Brenda of Del City, Oklahoma, and Dennis Morgan and wife Sheryl of Moore, Oklahoma; a sister, Sally Haas of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; two brothers, John Morgan and wife Kathryn of Waggoner, Oklahoma, and Dan Morgan and wife Pat of Independence, Missouri; five grandchildren, Dana Richards and wife Dana of Braman, Oklahoma, Sean Richards and wife Angela of Norman, Oklahoma, Chad Morgan of Tucson, Arizona, Jay Morgan and wife Julie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Megan Morgan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and five great grandchildren, Jordyn, Jared and Jonnie Richards of Braman, Oklahoma, and Camryn and Aiden Richards of Norman, Oklahoma.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Hallene Parr; and a brother, Aaron Morgan.

Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 22nd in the Blackwell Church of Christ with Lanny Jobe of the Blackwell Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Honorary casketbearers will be the grandchildren and great grandchildren of George N. Morgan.

Casketbearers will be Blackwell Police Department members, Chief Fred LeValley, Deputy Chief Dewayne Wood, Sgt. Tyrone Owens, Sgt. Jason Lunn, Sgt. John Mitchell and Lt. Jay Brewer. Serving in the Honor Guard will be Sgt. Tyrone Owens, Sgt. Doug Hedges, Officer Andy Teston and Officer Corey Ingrim.
