Gene Stanley Guyer of rural Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Sunday evening, October 4, 2009, in the Ponca City Medical Center in Ponca City, Oklahoma, at the age of 84 years.
Gene Stanley Guyer was born on July 28, 1925, in rural Blackwell to Vern B. and Alameda I. (Davis) Guyer. He grew up east of Blackwell attending Pleasant Valley School and Blackwell High School graduating in 1943. Following his education he assisted with the family farming operation before entering the United States Army serving during World War II. Following his discharge he returned to Kay County where he married JoeAnn Croft on March 2, 1947, in Ponca City and they settled on the family farm east of Blackwell where he continued his ranching and farming operation until his retirement in 2008. He was a member of the Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. He also held membership in the Western Grange and served on the Newkirk Coop Board. He received several conservation awards including the Governor's Award. He was also noted as an American Farmer and honorary FFA Chapter farmer. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting others in the community and having family gatherings. He was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa and his family held great priority.
He is survived by his wife, JoeAnn Guyer of Ponca City, Oklahoma; three daughters, Connie McCabe and husband Jim of Mountainburg, Arkansas, Gayle Cole and husband Chris of Claremore, Oklahoma, and Camille Sneath and husband Larry of Ponca City, Oklahoma; a sister, LaVerne Byler of Ponca City, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Dana Thrash and husband Jeff of Perkins, Oklahoma, Travis Barton of Cedar Vale, Kansas, Collin Cole and wife Melissa of Jenks, Oklahoma, Mallory Nitzel and husband Shane of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Gavin Sneath and wife Tera of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Mariah Laughlin and husband Aaron of Ponca City, Oklahoma; nine great grandchildren, Hallie, Haydan and Gunnar Thrash of Perkins, Oklahoma, Conner and Ali Sneath of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Dalton and Jagger Laughlin of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Cole Nitzel of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Carsen Cole of Jenks, Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 7th in the Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tara Foos officiating. Burial will be in the Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Serving as casketbearers will be grandsons, Gavin Sneath, Collin Cole, Travis Barton, Aaron Laughlin, Shane Nitzel and Jeff Thrash.
Viewing will only take place at the funeral home prior to the service.
