Gaylord Pohlenz of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Monday morning, March 31, 2008, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital at the age of 93 years.
Gaylord Pohlenz was born on June 4, 1914, in Argonia, Kansas, to George Melville and Elsie Bea (Scott) Pohlenz. He grew up in Argonia attending Argonia Public Schools graduating in 1931. He furthered his education by attending Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. Upon completion of his degree he taught high school math and band in southern Oklahoma. He married Ila Marie Cannon on December 18, 1936, in Calvin, Oklahoma, and they settled in Calvin. In 1942 they moved to California for six months where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft during World War II. They then moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he began working for Boeing Aircraft. He then began working in air traffic control in Ft. Worth and Albuquerque before returning to California where he attended Optometry College for two years. Following his education they moved to Ulysses, Kansas, for five years before moving to Anthony, Kansas, for ten years. They returned to California for a year before moving to Pratt, Kansas, and then back to Wichita where he worked as an optometrist for twelve years. Following retirement they moved to Osage, Oklahoma, for twelve years before moving to Blackwell to make their home. His wife preceded him in death on May 12, 2006. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell and the Kansas Optometric Association.
He is survived by two daughters, Wanda Wingerd and husband Jim of Blackwell and Verna Blanding of Courtland, Kansas; a son, Charles Pohlenz and wife Deatra of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Kenneth and Floyd Pohlenz.
Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 4th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Adkisson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial is set for that afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the Argonia Cemetery in Argonia, Kansas.
