Speech pathologist, fine arts, fine food enthusiast

Gary Lucas died July 14 at age 71.

Gary had a strong Christian faith and was a member of Claremont United Church of Christ.

He was born June 8, 1952 in rural Blackwell, Oklahoma, and "was theatrical and funny," his family shared. "At a young age he was chosen for the lead in 'The Man Who Came to Dinner.' He was very intelligent." He won a full scholarship to Vanderbilt University where he earned a master's degrees in speech communication and audiology.

He lived in New Orleans for 12 years and worked at the New Orleans Speech and Hearing Center and at chef Paul Prudhomme's Maison Dupuy, eventually co-managing the restaurant.

He next moved to California and lived at Mt. Baldy while working at Casa Colina Rehabilitation Center, Yianni's Restaurant, Gourmet Gourmet, and as a drink server for Claremont Graduate University, including for trustee Robert Redford.

He worked for 25 years as senior speech-language pathologist at Loma Linda Medical Center and Children's Hospital. He also worked at Circle City Hospital, a private practice and skilled nursing facility. He coordinated continuing education and conferences for Loma Linda Hospital's rehabilitation facility, where he also originated the pet therapy program.

He enjoyed theater, ballet, and opera, as well as fine dining.

He was predeceased by his father, John A. Lucas; sister, Joann Reyenne Osgood; and mother Naomi Wooderson Lucas.

He is survived by his nephew Lance Osgood, his wife, and their children; as well as many cousins.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 2nd at the First Methodist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Daniel Rickman officiating.
