On the Sabbath, November 23, 2008, Erma Faye Moore peacefully returned home with her Lord. Erma "Faye" was born January 13, 1922, in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Walter B. and Essie Pearl (Brown) Baker. She spent her entire life in Blackwell graduating from Blackwell High School in 1941. She then attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College. She began her career as an Optometrist Assistant/Optician in 1944 with Dr. Blake D. Faulkner. Upon his retirement in 1955 she continued working in this field with various other doctors until her retirement in 1994. Even after retirement many family and friends continued to visit her at her home and had their glasses repaired.
She was a member of the First Christian Church and Class 13 Sunday School in Blackwell. She also held membership in the Rebekah Lodge, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors.
Through out her life Faye enjoyed and cared for her family and friends. She was a daughter, sister, wife, step Mother, Aunt, Grand Aunt, Grandma, Great Grandma, Great, Great Grandma, Friend . . . . . . . . . By example she taught all that loved her God's love through compassion for others, love, patience, kindness and service. Faye was a sister to Calvius Baker, Harold Baker, Echo (Baker) Cooper, and Jack Baker. All preceded her in death. Faye married Charles O. Moore in Stockton, Kansas, on November 20, 1962, and instantly took on a new role as step-mother and grandma, which she took on with a loving heart. Charles preceded her in death on January 13, 1981.
Faye's primary hobby was bowling where she made many friends and those friendships continued throughout her life. She was captain of many teams – bowled in several city, state and national tournaments. She was active as an officer in the Blackwell Women's Bowling Association and in the Oklahoma State Bowling Association as a director and officer. She retired as Second Vice-President of the State Association in 1990. She was then honored by being inducted into the Blackwell Women's Bowling Hall of Fame in 1987 and the State Hall of Fame in 1990. She was selected as a Member Emeritus of the State Bowling Association.
Upon Faye's marriage to Charles, she took up an additional hobby of target shooting. This was something that Faye and Charles enjoyed doing together. Upon Charles' retirement, they also enjoyed traveling the United States and collecting state plates. She's remembered as the Grandma with the bottomless candy jar and is still thought of as "Grandma Erma" to the neighborhood children. She loved babysitting her nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her later years, she took on animal rescue – unofficially and enjoyed sharing experiences in this area with her grand-niece, Mistie.
Faye is survived by her step-daughter, Mildred Orwen of Fruita, Colorado, her grandchildren; Tom Spruill and wife Roberta of Topeka, Kansas, Deborah Kulling and husband William of Aurora, Colorado, Karen Lewan and husband Jim of Morro Bay, California and Fred Boley of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; nieces, Jackie Davis of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Linda Astle and husband John of Phoenix, Arizona, Georgia Lively of Blackwell, and Marilyn Adkins of Bay City, Texas; nephews, Harold Baker and Bill Baker of Norman, Oklahoma; great grandchildren, Shawn Spruill of Wichita, Kansas, Eric Beaty of Denver, Colorado, Shane Boley of Owasso, Oklahoma, Tiffani Masar of Westminster, Colorado and Matthew Spruill of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grand niece, Mistie Davis of Austin, Texas; and enjoyed and loved seven great great grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 28th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with James W. Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
Honorary casketbearers will be Tom Spruill, Fred Boley, William Kulling and James Lewan. Casketbearers will be Shawn Spruill, Matthew Spruill, Eric Beaty, Tiffani Masar and Shane Boley.
