Obituary

Elmer Arthur Rickards of Braman, Oklahoma, died Wednesday morning, June 4, 2008, in the Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 78 years.

Elmer Arthur Rickards was born on April 13, 1930, in west of Braman to Erma Wilson. He was raised by his grandparents, Cash and Nellie Rickards and grew up and attended school in South Haven, Kansas. Following his education he joined the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California and served two years and nine months with E Company, 1st BN, 2D Infantry during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge he began working for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. On October 8, 1956, he married Glenda Cathey at the Methodist Church in Braman and they settled in the Braman area the entire married life. He farmed for many years and also worked at the Blackwell Zinc Company. In 1992 he retired as a road grader operator from Kay County District 2 after fifteen years of service. He loved to coon hunt and coyote hunt and enjoyed taking his nephews with him hunting. They enjoyed traveling to Grand Lake and fishing at their second home. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Blackwell.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Rickards of Braman; his aunt and uncle, Earl and Virginia Rickards of South Haven, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by mother and grandparents.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 9th, in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell with James W. Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with a flag presentation by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Blackwell.

Serving as casketbearers will be Lockie Cathey, Wade McKinnis, Joe Ebert, Brett Bergman, Lance Bergman and Juston Ebert. Honorary Casketbearers will be Leroy Ray, Clifford Honick, Larry Ray, Warren White, Freddie Joe Lathers, Jerry Lathers, Frank Evans, John Campbell, Don Leatherman, Dan Leatherman, Ronnie Leatherman and his many coffee shop friends.

A memorial has been established with the Braman Fire Department or the Braman Swimming Pool in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
