Eileen M. Reid formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, passed away, September 9, 2009, from complications of a stroke in the Vacaville Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center in Vacaville, California, at the age of 93 years.
Eileen M. Reid was born on November 16, 1915, near Deer Creek, Oklahoma, to Carlyle and Jessie (Roberts) Goldsmith. Even as a youngster she enjoyed music. She began taking piano lessons at the age of seven and started giving piano lessons at the age of eleven. She attended a one-room rural school where she excelled as a student and girl's basketball player. She graduated from University Preparatory School in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, receiving certification in elementary education and began teaching the first eight grades in another one room school. She married Charles "Speedy" Reid on August 1, 1937, and they settled north of Deer Creek where she continued as a teacher until she returned to the home to assist with the family farming operation. During the summer harvest she would cook for as many as thirty harvesters on a wood burning stove. In 1951 they adopted three children, Richard at age four, Donald at age two, and Linda at eight months. The family lived on the farm until 1960 when they moved to Blackwell to make their home. They continued to expand their farming operation as well as being full time parents. Many of the seasonal farm workers became their friends for life. Following her husband's development of Alzheimer's disease, they moved to Oklahoma City where their nephew, Kenneth Webster and wife Nancy cared for them until her husband's death in December of 2004. Following his death she moved to Vacaville, California, to be near her son and to make her home.
She is survived by her son, Richard Reid and wife Sammie of Vacaville, California; her daughter, Linda Walcott of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a brother, Parker Goldsmith and wife Sabra of Hemet, California; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald Reid in 1966; and a brother, C. R. Goldsmith.
