Edward Layton Vannote of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Tuesday afternoon, August 6, 2013, in the Ponca City Nursing Home at the age of 85 years.
Edward Layton "Whitey" Vannote was born March 24, 1928, in Olive, Oklahoma to Clyde and Lilly (Stout) Vannote. He was a member of the United States Army and served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He married Elsie Bonham in June of 1952 in Blackwell, Oklahoma. After being discharged from the army, he worked as a heavy machine operator for Kay County. He then worked for the city of Blackwell as the dog catcher and retired in the mid 1980's. He enjoyed going fishing with his grandchildren, welding, and working in his shop to improve on existing designs to suit his needs.
He is survived by his wife Elsie Vannote of Blackwell; Oklahoma, two daughters, Mary Sherrill of Blackwell, Oklahoma, and Euvon Simmons of Buna, Texas; six grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Wesley Vannote.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2013, at the Blackwell Cemetery, Blackwell, Oklahoma, with Pastor Jack Peace of Ponca City Life Center officiating.
Casketbearers will be Walter Simmons, Sean Brown, Terry Brown, Allen Brown, Perry Smith and Carl Simmons.
