Obituary

Darrell Wayne Shields, 65, of Nardin, Oklahoma, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Darrell was born in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Larry Shields and Connie (Preston) Shields on May 27, 1961. He grew up in Nardin, and attended Nardin Public Schools until 5th Grade, and would later attend Blackwell Public Schools, graduating with the Blackwell High School class of 1979. While in school, he would practice boxing and participate in FFA as an officer. He would frequently take part in harvest, from Texas to the Dakotas, until the school season began.

On November 1,1980, Darrell married the love of his life and soul mate, Norma Kelle, in Nardin, Oklahoma at the Nardin Methodist Church, and they would make their home in Nardin.

Darrell would wear several hats through his life: he was a Veterinary Technician for Blackwell Animal Hospital, he worked in the oil and gas industry, he was a cattle farmer and finally worked as the Kay County District 3 as the Road Foreman. But his favorite hat to wear was being a grandfather.

Darrell enjoyed being outdoors and would hunt and fish. He collected hats and pins, and at least in his own mind, thought he was a gun collector. He loved to spend time with his grandkids, watching them play sports, riding the combine in the wheat field, and his latest hobby — hunting coyote-dogs in the side by side with his wife and grandkids. His family was his biggest passion.

Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Connie Shields.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Shields; his daughter, Afton Diedrich and husband Garin; his son, Tyson Shields and wife Jennifer; and his seven grandchildren: Paisley Diedrich, Krue Diedrich, Hank Shields, Kailor Diedrich, Lane Shields, Piper Diedrich, and Ivy Shields. He is also survived by multiple aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Friday, October 30th, 2026, at 2:00 PM, in the Roberts Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Robert Foos officiating. Burial to follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Nardin.

Casketbearers include Tyson Shields, Garin Diedrich, Tyler Gibson, Grady Wooderson, Bryce Bechtel, Colton Dell, John Neighbors, and Austin Cantillon. Honorary bearers include Scott Shepherd, Greg Bechtel, Rock Reese, the late Bob Mitchell, the late Brett Hall, and his seven grandkids: Paisley Diedrich, Krue Diedrich, Hank Shields, Kailor Diedrich, Lane Shields, Piper Diedrich, and Ivy Shields.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Darrell's honor to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or to Shriner's Hospital, in care of Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
