Claude Mitchell Pemberton of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday morning, December 2, 2009, in the Willow Haven Nursing Home in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, at the age of 80 years.
Claude Mitchell Pemberton was born on April 10, 1929, in Knowles, Oklahoma, to John Henry and Flossie Lyretta (Hall) Pemberton. In 1935 he moved with his family to Tonkawa, Oklahoma, where he attended Billings Public Schools and Three Sands Public Schools graduating from Three Sands High School. He entered the United States Marine Corps in 1952 serving in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1960 with the rank of corporal. He married Marianne Tarpenning on November 27, 1957, in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and they settled on a farm east of Blackwell where they engaged in a farming operation. He also worked for twenty-five years as a soil conservation technician for the USDA Soil Conservation District in Newkirk. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tonkawa where he also served as an elder for many years. He enjoyed outdoor activities and being on the farm.
He is survived by his wife, Marianne Pemberton of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a son, Kris Hochderffer and his wife Susan of Austin, Texas; and a granddaughter, Lauren Reyes of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Mitchell Duane and Mark Allen Pemberton; three brothers; and three sisters.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 4th in the First Presbyterian Church in Tonkawa with the Rev. Phillip Erwin officiating. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Abbey Mausoleum in the Blackwell Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Blackwell American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Casketbearers will be Merle Frazier, Randy Burkhalter, Bill Erwin, Kirk Boersma, Larry Purdy and Richard Denton. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Houston Hall, Clark McKee, Lonnie Bray, Max Benefield, Paul Woods and Don Gibbons.
