Longtime Blackwell resident Charles "Doug" Mitchell passed away after losing his battle with cancer on Friday, August 12th shortly after 9:30 in the morning. He was 58.
Per his request, he was laid to rest without a service in the Blackwell Cemetery on Saturday afternoon next to his father and mother.
Doug was born on April 24, 1953 in the Blackwell Hospital to Gene "Boogie" and Evelyn (Walkley) Mitchell. At age 6, he moved with his family to Liberal, Kansas where he stayed until graduating high school. During his time in Liberal, Doug excelled in football, baseball, basketball and various track events, setting many local records—some of which remain unbroken to this day. After high school, he attended college at Bethany College in Linsborg, Kansas, and worked variously as an auctioneer, accountant, oil-field pumping supply salesman and antiquities dealer. Eventually, he settled into a long career working as a water treatment plant operator at the Blackwell Municipal Water Plant. Late in his life he moved to Oklahoma City and began a career as a mental health technician at St. Anthony's Behavioral Diagnostic Center.
He is survived by his son, Christiaan, of Honolulu; his sister, Frankie Campbell and brother, Randy, both of Oklahoma City; and his brother, Jon, of Blackwell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Anthony's Foundation Sisters Fund, or the Frank C. Love Cancer Institute.
