Carol Lea Hobaugh-Maudlin longtime resident of the Braman and South Haven area died early Friday morning, August 14, 2009, in the Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City, Kansas, where she had been a resident since November 2006. She was 72 years.
Carol Lea Hobaugh-Maudlin was born on April 28, 1937, in Conway Springs, Kansas, the first child of Lawrence and Euvela (Wycoff) Ervin. The Ervin family moved to South Haven, Kansas, in 1942. Carol attended South Haven Public Schools and graduated from South Haven High School in May 1955, she was class salutatorian, and her class was the last to graduate at the three story red brick schoolhouse built in 1918. She and other class members were on their Colorado Spring Senior Trip when the devastating tornado struck Blackwell and Udall. During Carol's school years, she was active in student council, FFA, Y-Teens, glee club, basketball, dramatics, and Methodist Youth Fellowship. Carol went on to further her education at Emporia State Teachers College in the fall of 1955 with plans to become a teacher. She married Charles Hobaugh on December 21, 1955, at the Braman Methodist Church and they made their home on a farm northeast of Braman. They had four children, Constance, Donald, Keith, and Debra. They were members of the South Haven Methodist Church. She served her family as a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. On January 19, 1969, Charles preceded her in death and she continued to make Braman her home. She then went back to school for her teaching degree at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. She then started teaching at the Cowley County State Community College in Arkansas City, Kansas in 1972. She continued her education receiving her master's degree from Wichita State University, and received her doctorate from Oklahoma State University. On May 15, 1981, she married Coy Don Maudlin in South Haven, Kansas, they continued to make the Braman farm their home. She continued to teach and travel the United States giving seminars retiring in 1999. She was very active in church where she enjoyed quilting and teaching Sunday school. She also loved spending time with her family, taking the grandchildren fishing and attending their numerous activities. Carol was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and was an avid Royals baseball fan.
She is survived by her husband, Don Maudlin of Braman, Oklahoma; two daughters: Connie McGehan and husband, Mark, of O'Fallon, Missouri; and Debbie Ray and husband, Todd, of South Haven Kansas; two sons: Don Hobaugh and wife, Cindy, of Braman, Oklahoma; and Keith Hobaugh and wife, Sandy, of Braman, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren: Cara and Greg McGehan; Travis Hobaugh and wife, Gayle; Audrey Day and husband, Quintin; Hunter, Parker and Kendall Ray; one great granddaughter, Jeslyn Day, who was born on August 12, 2009; ten step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; one brother, William Ervin of Topeka, Kansas; and one sister, Wilda Harsh of Argonia, Kansas.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 am. Monday, August 17, 2009, in the South Haven Methodist Church in South Haven, Kansas, with Rev. Russell McAlister officiating Burial will follow in the Braman Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Travis Hobaugh, Greg McGehan, Scott Harsh, Gregg Harsh, John Harsh and Tim Ervin. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Hunter Ray, Parker Ray, Audrey Day, Cara McGehan, Kendall Ray and Jeslyn Day.
Family will be at the funeral home to greet friends on Sunday, August 16, 2009, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
