Obituary

Carl Hohmann of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in the Blackwell Regional Hospital in Blackwell at the age of 81 years.

Carl Hohmann was born on February 8, 1928, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Karl E. and Frances M. (Hofstetter) Hohmann. He grew up on a farm outside of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, and graduated from Deer Creek High School. He then furthered his education at Bethel College in Newton, Kansas. After two years in the military, he began his teaching career in industrial arts in Coldwater, Kansas. He later earned a Master's Degree in industrial arts education from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. He married Fern Krehbiel in 1955 in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. Following the death of his father, Carl returned to the family farm in Deer Creek. He enjoyed his eighteen years of teaching, but his real love was farming. He remained active in farming until his death. After returning to Deer Creek, he worked to improve the quality of life in the rural area. He helped lay the groundwork for the Blackwell Rural Water Corporation and served on the board from 1968 to 1994. Additionally, he served as director on the Kay Electric Cooperative board for over thirty years, serving as board president for fifteen of those years. He was a lifetime member of the Deer Creek Mennonite Church where he taught Sunday School and served in various church roles. He was an active member of the Deer Creek Lions Club and served as the sexton for the Deer Creek Bayard Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Fern Hohmann of Deer Creek, Oklahoma; four children, Karla Leuenberg and husband Brian of De Soto, Kansas, Max Hohmann and wife Becky of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, Tresa Hohmann of Katy, Texas, and Kyle Hohmann and wife Nancy of Enid, Oklahoma; a sister, Florine LeClere of Garden City, Kansas; and grandchildren, Jason Leuenberg, Garrett Hohmann and wife Stacie, Katie Kysar and husband Preston, Greg Hohmann, Kellan Hohmann, Jared Hohmann and Adam Hohmann.

Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 9th in the Deer Creek Mennonite Church with the Rev. Gary Janzen officiating. Burial will be in the Bayard Cemetery in Deer Creek.

Casketbearers will be Preston Kysar, Jason Leuenberg, Garrett Hohmann, Greg Hohmann, Kellan Hohmann, Jared Hohmann and Adam Hohmann.
