Bernice Emeline Hiatt passed away Saturday, June 26 at the age of 94 years, in her rural Braman home with family at her bedside. She was born on July 1, 1915, in Sumner County, Kansas, to Roy and Edna (Johnson) Foy. She grew up on a farm near South Haven, Kansas, attending a one-room school house through her elementary years. Bernice graduated high school from South Haven, Kansas.
She married Cecil Hiatt on September 22, 1935, in Braman, Oklahoma, where they resided with Cecil's parents operating the Hiatt Dairy Farm. In later years, they moved to a farm west of Braman where she spent many years farming, running the tractor and combine and managing a cow-calf herd. She maintained her home as well as caring for her family, friends and neighbors. She was a member of the Braman Church of Christ and later the Blackwell Church of Christ. She also held membership in the Helping Hour Club for over fifty years. She enjoyed crochet, traveling with Cecil in their motor home and attending many music festivals. Most of all, she enjoyed her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Claud Hiatt and wife Madelyn of rural Braman; her daughter, Foy Howerton and husband Richard of Mannford, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Debbie Freisberg and husband Joe of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sherry Sternad and husband Bruce of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rick Howerton and wife Marty of Keller, Texas, Marsha Manners of Braman, and Melissa Moore and husband Roger of Blackwell, Oklahoma; eight great grandchildren, Brandon Grell of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Dustin Grell of Braman, Clinton Grell of Wichita, Kansas, Natalie Grell Norman of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Storm Sternad of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Heather Hardt of Norman, Oklahoma, and Hunter and Raegan Moore of Blackwell; and two great great grandchildren, Brady Norman of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Hayden Grell of Braman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil, on July 25, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Doris Smith; and a brother, Eugene Foy.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 30th in the Blackwell Church of Christ with Lanny Jobe of the Blackwell Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow in the Braman Cemetery.
Honorary casketbearers will be Stuart Foy, Jimmy Hiatt, Ross Hiatt and Eddie LeValley. Serving as casketbearers will be Rick Howerton, Brandon Grell, Dustin Grell, Clinton Grell, Storm Sternad and Barry Patton.
A memorial has been established in her honor with Carter Hospice in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
