Obituary

Bernard Steffes of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, at the Integris Hospice Home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the age of 66 years.

Bernard Steffes was born on February 24, 1944, in Canute, Oklahoma to Leo Henry Steffes and Elizabeth Alice Hoffman Steffes. He attended Holy Family School in Canute until it closed and then went to Canute Public School and graduated from Canute High School in 1962.

Bernard moved to Blackwell in 1971 where he met Judy Elder. After dating for only 7 weeks, they married. They made their home south of Blackwell where they raised their family and lived happily together for 38 years. Bernard worked for Electron until it closed and then he continued to farm until he went to work for Smith International in Ponca City. He retired from Smith in Feb. 2009. In his retirement, he did contract farming until he became too ill in January of this year. During his retirement, he participated in activities he truly enjoyed like hunting with his friends, part-time farming, family events, and playing with his great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, of Blackwell, Oklahoma; four children, Wanda Diebold of Enid, Oklahoma, Monica Syverson and husband, Todd, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Lizette Higdon and husband, Robert, of Claremore, Oklahoma, and Bryan Steffes and wife, Sarah, of Bethany, Oklahoma; six grandchildren Nina Leon of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Ariel Higdon of Claremore, Oklahoma, Bryanna Diebold of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Jerod Syverson of Blackwell, Oklahoma Conner and Donovan Funk of Bethany, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren Gabriella and Talynn Cummings of Ponca City, Oklahoma; Bernard comes from a family of fourteen children and is survived by ten siblings Leona Schones, Gerald Steffes, Dolores Simmons, William Steffes, Betty Lindsey, Cornelia Gelnar, Geneva Waller, Robert Steffes, Leon Steffes, and Mary Ann Gunter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings Anita Hoffman, Donald Steffes, and Leo Steffes.

Services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel, with Father Michael Wheelahan of Medford, Oklahoma, officiating.

A memorial has been established at the American Cancer Society in care of Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
