Obituary

A Celebration of Life for longtime Blackwell resident Mildred Bullock will be held at the First Christian Church on Monday afternoon, April 21st, at 2 o'clock.

She passed away in St. Mary's Hospital at Enid, OK, on Thursday, April 10, 2008, at the age of 92 years. Under the direction of Roberts & Son Funeral Home, interment was in the Blackwell Cemetery on April 14th with Pastor Jeff Koch officiating.

Beatrice Mildred Bullock was born on March 4, 1916, in Waynoka, OK; the daughter of Alva A. and Myrtle M. (Nicholson) Shroff. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Blackwell where she grew up and graduated from Blackwell High School with the Class of 1934. She furthered her education at Central State Teachers College. After receiving a temporary teaching certificate, she taught for two years at a rural school near Deer Creek, OK, in Grant County.

On May 20, 1936, she married the love of her life, Ted M. Bullock, in Blackwell where they lived their entire married life. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1969, and she continued to live in Blackwell in the home that they built and moved into in 1954.

She was baptized as a young girl in the First Christian Church where she remained a member until her death. Her Sunday School Class was XL. She kept the Cradle Roll at the church for many years, welcoming each new baby born to parents who attended there.

Mildred's interest in music began as a child. She played the piano "by ear" at a young age and was the pianist for school functions, Sunday School parties and other social gatherings. When the "Mother Singers" was organized in the late 1940's, she was an original member.

Her family was always most important in her life and meant everything to her. How she looked forward to and enjoyed all the travels and trips she took with her family throughout the years!

She considered her main role to be a Wife and Mother, and she was a full-time homemaker until the mid-1950's when she began substitute teaching in the Blackwell Elementary Schools for almost forty years. After Ted passed away, she expanded her love for children by becoming a child caregiver for many Blackwell families.

Mildred was a precinct worker for the Kay Co. Election Board for over forty-five years and also worked in the Educational Building during the Kay Co. Free Fair. Both of these venues provided opportunities to see and visit with ADULT friends, neighbors and acquaintances.

She was an excellent seamstress and in earlier years sewed most of her and her family's clothes. She enjoyed being out-of-doors, doing yard work, and tending to her many flowers, shrubs and plants. Until her health limited her outdoor activities, one of Mildred's favorite things was to take the neighborhood children on "Nature Walks with Mrs. B." through her front and back yards teaching them about Birds, Bugs, Butterflies, Bushes, Buds, Blooms and Blossoms.

Family cherishing her memory are a daughter, Jan Bradford and her husband, Bill, of Tonkawa, OK.; a son, Rev. Ron Bullock and his wife, Karla, of Aurora, CO.; and a sister, Dora Jaunita Dunning of Blackwell; three grandsons, Brent Bradford and his wife, Joey, of Ponca City, OK.; Brook Bullock and his wife, Mary Catherine; Derrick Herrington and his wife, Stephanie, all of Oklahoma City; eight great-granddaughters, Taryn Bradford of Dallas TX; Courtney, Kelsey, Katlin, and Katrina Bullock of Bartlesville; Olivia and Chloe Bullock and Ashtyn Herrington of Oklahoma City; one niece, Claudiatte Dunning of McKinney, TX; one nephew, Doug Dunning of Albuquerque, NM.

Honorary Pallbearers are the Elders and Deacons of the First Christian Church and Hessel Purdy, Rhod Buser, Chuck Sprague, Jack Steffen, Dale White, Kenny Waggoner and Becky and Annie Wolfe.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, a memorial fund be established in her name at the First Christian Church, 306 East Coolidge Ave., Blackwell, OK 74631. Family will be at her home, 261 Enlow Ave. in Blackwell.

It is said that every time you lose somebody you love…you gain an Angel you know. Although there is an overwhelming feeling of loss in our earthly lives here; we are assured that Heaven is rejoicing and enriched today.
