Amos Smith Jr. of Deer Creek, Oklahoma, died December 22, 2012, at his residence in rural Deer Creek, Oklahoma, at the age of 85 years.
Amos Smith Jr. was born on August 16, 1927, in Proctor, Oklahoma, to Amos and Ina (Richards) Smith Sr. He grew up on a farm near Westville, Oklahoma, attending Westville Public Schools. At the age of fifteen he moved with his parents to California where at the age of sixteen he began working for Western Steel Shipyards. He worked there until November 28, 1945, when he entered the United States Army serving as an instructor electrician. On May 7, 1947, he was discharged from the Army and moved back to Proctor, Oklahoma, where he began farming. In 1966 he moved to Deer Creek, Oklahoma, and married Jennie Leah Gribbos-Cless on November 22, 1966, in Deer Creek and they settled on a farm in Grant County where they engaged in farming for forty six years. During this time he also worked at the Blackwell Zinc Company for twenty years. He was a member of the Blackwell American Legion and the Deer Creek Christian Church. He enjoyed farming, riding horses, watching football, gardening, and loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Jennie Leah Smith of Deer Creek; three daughters, Judy Morris and husband Sonny of West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma, Patty Moore and husband Gail of Deer Creek, and Sally Leatherman and husband Ronnie of Braman, Oklahoma; a son, Evan Cless and Vickie Coleman of Ponca City, Oklahoma; a daughter-in-law, Debra Cless; a sister, Betty Craig and husband Aubry of Moore, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jimmie, Ray, and Arthur Smith; and two sons, Steve Smith and Larry Cless.
Memorial services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 29th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Smith of Medford, Oklahoma, officiating.
