Obituary

Alfred Leon Potts Sr. of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday evening, June 24, 2009, in the Integris Bass Medical Center in Enid, Oklahoma, at the age of 86 years.

Alfred Leon Potts Sr. was born on December 5, 1922, in Beeler, Kansas, to Ira Clarence and Daisy Violet (Lord) Potts. He grew up in various communities as his father's work took them. Following his education he entered the United States Marine Corps on August 16, 1941, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged on August 16, 1946. He married Ida Leona Ferguson on June 21, 1951, in Blackwell and they made Blackwell their home except for four years in Colorado where he drove a truck. He also served in the military during the Korean Conflict and following his discharge he returned to Blackwell where he worked as a carpenter. His wife preceded him in death on May 4, 1986, and he continued to make Blackwell his home. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blackwell. He also held membership in the Blackwell Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

He is survived by three sons, Alfred Potts Jr. of Augusta, Kansas, Terry Potts of Houston, Texas, and Wayne Potts of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a sister, Laura Moorland of Ponca City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ira, Avery and Leonard Potts; and three sisters, Ruby Krulib, Cora Hopkins and Bonny Mondell.

Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 29th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell with James W. Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with military rites performed by the Blackwell American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
